Twitter’s new Lists feature is now available to all users, project lead Nick Kallen has just confirmed through a tweet. The functionality has been in testing for weeks now with a select group of users, and a couple of weeks ago, opened to a wider audience.

The Twitter Lists feature has a similar concept like a group, but this time, you can actually share your group/list to others, if you want to. To create a new list, simply click on the “New List” link on your Twitter’s sidebar. Then, go to a friend’s twitter profile page to add him/her to your list. You can also categorize your Twitter friends to more than just 1 list. So you may have a friend who’s in 2 or 3 Twitter Lists.

The idea is to allow people to curate lists of Twitter accounts. For example, you could create a list of the funniest Twitter accounts of all time, athletes, local businesses, friends, or any compilation that makes sense.

Lists are public by default (but can be made private) and the lists you’ve created are linked from your profile. Other Twitter users can then subscribe to your lists. This means lists have the potential to be an important new discovery mechanism for great tweets and accounts.

Since it was turned on for all users late last week, everyone is talking about Twitter’s new Lists feature. Most people seem to like it, but some have no idea what it’s good for. Perhaps those people will understand a bit more about Lists potential with a new widget that Twitter has launched today.

As predicted the Twitter Lists API is causing a fast frenzy amongst Twitter developers anxious to be first to support the new Lists feature. Here are some developers who released their list widget :

1.       TeamSeesmic,  Seesmic Desktop’s Lists support is as good as, if not better than, one could home for after such a quick turnaround. Not only do your existing created lists now appear in the left-hand column, but you can also add users to your lists and create new lists from within the app.

2.       TweetGrid,  Twitter Lists Widget is a simple widget built by TweetGrid with a big purpose: letting you create a widget to display tweets from your Twitter Lists.

3.       Twitter, Twitter’s getting into the Lists widget game with its own Twitter List widget as well.

While being first to release Twitter Lists support is certainly a big win for Seesmic, we expect to see many more applications, including TweetDeck (TweetDeck), to follow suit in the very near future.
