The new PS3 slim available on September 1
After months of speculation, Sony announced the new slimmer and lighter version of the PlayStation 3 video game console at the GamesCom conference in Germany. The previous 80-gigabyte PS 3 has been selling at $399 and now PS3
Slim model CECH-2000A reduced at $299. The big price cut was a dramatic change based on a big redesign. The PS 3 Slim goes on sale Sept. 1 in North America. And here is some fact about PS3 Slim:- You will not get Stand, Like the older model, the new PS 3 Slim can stand vertically. But the problem is the Slim isn’t really stable enough to balance vertically without its stand. And you will not get stand in the box. Sony will have an accessory stand that ensures the vertical console won’t tip over easily. The stand is sold separately for $24, seems over priced for me.
- New Color, the new PS3 slim will have Matte Black color, different from previous which has Piano Black (Glossy) color. The black case has a different style of plastic, shifting from a glossy plastic to a bumpy kind. The logo is different and there are fewer air vents.
- Slim body, with 11.42 x 2.56 x 11.42 inch and 7.05 lb. weight, the new PS3 more slim and light. Sony saved on materials since the PS 3 Slim is a third lighter and a third smaller than the current PS 3.
- Hard Drive and Chip Upgrades, Cutting costs by redesigning chips is something all electronics companies do. The benefit of having smaller circuits is that you can do the same amount of processing in a smaller amount of space. That requires less material, which lowers costs. It can also reduce heat coming from the chip. Sony launched the PS 3 in 2006 with a 90-nanometer Cell chip. Last year, it shifted to a 65-nanometer chip (smaller is more difficult to make).
Even as it reduces chip costs, it moves to bigger and bigger hard disks. Initially, those hard disks are more expensive. But with higher volumes and production efficiencies, those larger hard disks eventually become cheaper to produce than the older hard disks. In this case, Sony shifted from an 80-gigabyte model at $399 to a 120-gigabyte model at $299. - PS3 3.0 Firmware Not Initially Pre-Installed, That’s because it’s released on September 1, the same day the Slim goes on sale. Sony says it’ll preinstall 3.x in later units. If you need it, you’ll need to sit through a software update out of the box.
- No Linux for You! The current 80- and 160GB PS3s support Linux, but Sony’s cut the cord on the Slim because it wants to “standardize” the OS.
- Minimalism Feature, it has no on-off switch at the back, so now relies on the standby power button at the front. Both the power and eject buttons are no longer touch-style; they’ve been changed to physical buttons. PS3 slim has no Media Card Reader neither.
- Lower power consumption, PS3 slim only need 250W
