Office 2010 Will be Available in Online Service

July 21st, 2009 | 4 Comments | Posted in Internet News

Microsoft made the important announcement at the opening of a Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans. They will launch Office 2010 Web Apps. Office Web applications will be lightweight, browser versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote that provide access to documents from anywhere, according to Microsoft.

The Price is still unknown; however, Microsoft says it will bring the number of Office editions down from eight to five. When Office Web applications launch, they will be free and available through Microsoft’s Windows Live set of online services.

Microsoft already offers some online services in the form of Windows Live and Office Live, but these are limited to basic collaboration tools (email, calendars, etc.) and building business websites rather than creating and editing documents via a web browser. All you’ll need to access the online apps is a Windows Live account (which is free) — though it’s unclear whether premium features will be available for users who pay extra.

Sadly we’ll have to wait a bit longer for testing Office 2010 Web applications. According to Microsoft, its Web apps can’t be tested until later this year.

“light weight web versions of office”. Isn’t that what Google Docs does? And if that’s all it is, then why in the world would you choose to pay for MS Office, versus using Google Docs for free?

We’ll see how it all shakes out.
