Google Chrome OS Launching Next Week, the only thing left is building the robots.
As we report long time ago, Google has built the operating system on a Linux foundation, with a new window manager, its Chrome web browser, and not much else. Chrome OS applications will run right in the browser, and they’ll be cross-compatible with other standards-compliant browsers on other platforms. In a nutshell, Google aims to provide a fast-booting, secure system “initially targeted at net books.”?
According to Arrington from Techcrunch, they heard this rumor from a reliable source that Google will launch this OS in the next week. Google previously said to expect an early version of the OS in the fall.
Arrington also believes the early build of Chrome OS will lack support for hardware drivers, which have yet to be built. From the sounds of it, Arrington is talking about driver support for basic hardware components like network and graphics cards as opposed to peripheral equipment like printers and scanners. “A robust set of functioning drivers is extremely important to Chrome OS’s success,” Arrington said. “People will want to download this to whatever computer they use and have it just work.”
Without driver support the OS will be essentially useless. So Arrington’s best guess is that Chrome OS will only be ready to work on a small number of computers at launch, such as the Asus Eee PC and possibly some of Google’s Chrome OS partners like Acer, Toshiba, and Hewlett-Packard.
Ok. Let we wait next week, did they will launch this week or not. But remember the version of Chrome browser for Chrome OS that leaked for Linux machines a few weeks ago? It had a nonoperational Start-style button, a clock embedded in the title bar, and a minimalist interface.
However, this is a brilliant move from Google. Google could just sit on its head office, throw more resources into advertising its own browser and OS, and wait ’til it eventually dominates the market. Search, email, advertising, online office suite, VoIP, real-time protocol: everything it touches turns gold. And finally dump Microsoft from its throne.
And after this launch and after Google has bought some fighter jet, the only thing left is building the robots.

i tried Chrome OS and it is pretty much like a scaled down version of Ubuntu. Chrome is just based on Linux and there is nothing new about it.

Chrome OS is just another rebranded Linux GUI, it would be much better if Google came up with an OS that would directly compete with Windows.
